New standoff between the Biden administration and the Texas federal government. This time, the US Department of Justice filed a complaint Thursday, November 4 against Texas for a law recently adopted by this state which the government of Joe Biden believes restricts the right to vote. The lawsuit filed in federal court in San Antonio accuses the legislation of violating federal election and civil rights laws.

Texas law, which its supporters say makes elections safer by protecting against fraud, prohibits drive-in voting (that is, while driving your car) and places several other restrictions on voting times and postal voting. Critics argue that it disproportionately affects the vote of minorities, especially black Americans, who historically tend to vote Democrats.

The Justice Department said in a statement, among other things, that the legislation infringed voters’ rights by restricting the ability to access assistance for those in need of assistance voting.

“Our democracy depends on the right of eligible voters to put a ballot in the ballot box and on the fact that this ballot is counted”Justice Minister Merrick Garland said promising his department would do everything possible “to protect this fundamental pillar of our society”.
