US President Joe Biden remains “absolutely” in the race for the White House, his campaign manager said on Friday, despite growing doubts about his physical and mental capacity to serve a second term.
Biden has been in turmoil since his disastrous performance in his June 27 debate with Donald Trump. In recent days, several Democratic lawmakers have urged him to throw in the towel, fearing their party will be devastated in the Nov. 5 election.
For now, the president is holding firm.
“Joe Biden is more determined than ever to defeat Donald Trump,” his campaign manager, Jen O’Malley Dillon, told MSNBC.
“The president is the leader of our campaign and the country,” she added. “He is clearly […] the best person to take on Donald Trump.”
“You’ve heard it directly from the president over and over again: He’s running to win, he’s our candidate and he’s going to be our president for a second term,” she insisted.
The official nevertheless acknowledged that the last few weeks had been “difficult” for the campaign team.
“We have seen, undeniably, a certain decline in support, but it is a small movement,” she said.
