US President Joe Biden authorized, on Friday May 19, that F-16 fighters, eagerly awaited by the Ukrainian forces, be delivered to them after months of hesitation. Volodymyr Zelensky asks for 200.

The American F-16 was first on Volodymyr Zelensky’s wish list. This ultra-modern fighter, the most used in the world, is more efficient than the old Soviet MIC-29 used by the Ukrainian army. The United States gave, Friday, May 19, the green light after months of hesitation. The announcement comes as the Ukrainians claim to be preparing their major counter-offensive.

Ukraine demands 200 F-16s

Struggling in the air war against the Russians, they hope these versatile fighters can make a difference. “We are talking about planes capable of bombing, air fighters, destroying radars to blind Russian anti-aircraft defences. It really is a multi-capable device”, explains Gaétan Powis, journalist at Air and Cosmos. It would be the Netherlands, Denmark or Norway that would provide the devices and not the United States directly. Their operationality will depend on the training of Ukrainian pilots and mechanics, this could be the case in four months. Ukraine is asking for 200 F-16s.
