US President Joe Biden and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron pledged on Wednesday February 2 to coordinate their response to the Russian military presence on the Ukrainian border, the White House explained.

The two leaders spoke in a telephone conversation, which came after Emmanuel Macron did not rule out traveling to Russia to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis. The two heads of state “affirmed their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”, according to the US executive. They also reviewed “the ongoing coordination both in diplomacy and in preparations to impose swift and severe economic measures on Russia should it further invade Ukraine”.

Westerners have accused Moscow since the end of 2021 of having massed tens of thousands of soldiers on the borders of Ukraine for a potential invasion. Russia denies any intention of invasion, claiming that it only wants to guarantee its security.
