(Toronto) Jim Peterson, a former federal minister in a government led by Paul Martin, died Friday at the age of 82.
Former Ontario Premier David Peterson confirmed his brother’s death to The Canadian Press. He said he died of a heart attack on his farm.
He described his brother as a generous, well-respected and accomplished man.
Jim Peterson was the MP for the Toronto riding of Willowdale for 23 years. He was elected in 1980 before being defeated in the next election in 1984. His return to the political scene in 1988 was successful and he was consistently re-elected until his retirement in 2007.
He was Minister of International Trade from 2003 to 2006 during the reign of Liberal Paul Martin.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid tribute to him, praising his “invaluable contribution to Canada’s economic prosperity.”
“As we reflect on the remarkable legacy that Jim left us, we are inspired by the exemplary dedication he demonstrated to building a more inclusive and prosperous Canada,” said Mr. Trudeau.
