Jérôme Saporito, director of La Chaîne L’Équipe: “The Women’s World Cup is much too expensive for us”

With a budget of 35 million euros per year, the antenna of channel 21 of the TNT cannot afford the competition which opens in July and which still does not have a broadcaster. On the other hand, it relies on less media-friendly competitions. A profitable strategy.

It is the only free sports channel not only on DTT, but throughout Europe. The L’Équipe Channel broadcasts 2,500 hours of sport per year, 40 different disciplines, from football to basketball, including cycling, biathlon and… even soapboxes!

Its budget of 35 million euros does not allow it to have the French football team, nor the Ligue 1, let alone the Champions League. But the audience continues to grow: from 1.3% audience share in February 2002, it fell a year later to 1.8%.

“In four years, we have gained 1.6 million daily viewers”rejoices Jérôme Saporito, the director of The Channel The Team, guest media by Célyne Baÿt-Darcourt. He also confides his regret:The Women’s World Cup is far too expensive for us.”
