Jennie Carignan becomes Chief of Defence Staff

The Canadian Armed Forces will be led as of July 18 by Lieutenant-General Jennie Carignan, the first woman to be appointed Chief of the Defence Staff.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement in a press release on Wednesday morning.

Promoted to the rank of general, Jennie Carignan served in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Afghanistan and Syria during her 35 years of service. She led the NATO Mission in Iraq between 2019 and 2020.

For the past three years, she has been in charge of the project to transform the culture of the Canadian armed forces, in the wake of allegations of inappropriate behaviour and sexual misconduct at the highest levels.

She replaces General Wayne Eyre, the current Chief of the Defence Staff, who is retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces after 40 years of service.
