Every day, the French are learning to manage rising food prices. Some of them are now shopping to the rhythm of supermarket catalogs in order to find bargains.

In a supermarket near Lyon (Rhône), it’s the day the promotions start. Like every week, it is then with the catalog in hand that customers do their shopping. “Three products for 1.90 euros instead of 3.80 euros, it’s still worth the cost”says Liliane, retired like her husband. With the rising cost of living, they have become very vigilant about day-to-day expenses. That day, they saved three euros.

Mother of three, Morgane, she shops almost exclusively from promotions that she spots on Internet. “Total amount of discounts, five euros, so I got 14 euros”she notes on her receipt. She estimates that she saves more than 100 euros per month. “I buy in advance to precisely use in the long term at a lower cost”she explains. According to a specialist, promotions make it possible to cope with soaring prices only in part. “Overall, a distributor is not made to lose money so he will put products on promotion and then make a balanced margin on the other products”says Elizabeth Cony.
