Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the candidate for major cities and overseas

He did better than in 2017. If he came third in the first round of the presidential election, like five years ago, Jean-Luc Mélenchon still managed to improve his score. With 21.95% of the vote (according to the provisional results available on Monday April 11) against 19.58% in 2017, the Popular Union candidate has gained 2.4 points in five years. This increase can be explained by good scores in the major conurbations of France and in the overseas departments. The map below shows this progression.

In France, Jean-Luc Mélenchon has improved his score in all cities with more than 100,000 registered voters. Thus in Strasbourg, in the Bas-Rhin, he came first with 35.5% of the votes cast (+11.1 points compared to 2017).

He also gained more than 10 points in Lille (+10.6), Paris (+10.5 points) and Rennes (+10.4). The deputy of Bouches-du-Rhône also wins points on his electoral lands, in Marseille, where he came first with 31.1%, improving his score by 6.3 points compared to 2017.

The gains in votes of the rebellious candidate are particularly marked in the Ile-de-France region, where he came first in five out of eight departments. Thus in Essonne with 28.1% of the vote (+6.2), in Val-de-Marne 32.7% (+8.1), in Val-d’Oise 33.2% (+ 9.2), in Seine-et-Marne 25.9% (+5) and especially in Seine-Saint-Denis 49.1% (+15.1). Jean-Luc Mélenchon was acclaimed in working-class neighborhoods. In Clichy-sous-Bois (Seine-Saint-Denis), he won 65.4% of the vote (+ 24.6); in Trappes (Yvelines), it totals 60.6% of the vote (+28).

The leader of the People’s Union finally achieved great scores in the overseas departments, where he came first everywhere with the exception of Mayotte. In Guadeloupe, Jean-Mélenchon obtained 56.2% of the votes cast, i.e. 32 points more than in 2017. In Martinique, he took 53.1% of the votes (+25.7 points), in Guyana 50.6 % (+26.9) and Reunion 40.3% (+15.7).
