He said to himself “dismayed” by these statements, because, according to him, an intervention by ground troops “would make us belligerents”.

“We are neither Ukrainian nor Russian, and it is not true, contrary to the verbal escalation on the subject, that we are threatened [dans] all of Europe.”

Jean-Luc Mélenchon recalls that“there is no question of waging war”especially since “all the allies said they did not want to participate” to this initiative. For the same reason, he opposed the idea of providing a “nuclear umbrella” to European allies in the event of American withdrawal. The head of state declared that he was of the “France’s responsibility to make its deterrent capacity available to Europe”. “Nuclear weapons are made to deter attacks on France”judged the leader of LFI.

Fabien Roussel on the same wavelength

France must “be part of the solution, not part of the problem”insisted Jean-Luc Mélenchon, demanding “a conference on peace” and warning against “an escalation of which no one knows the outcome”.

A fear shared by Fabien Roussel, for whom the President of the Republic “prepare the minds” to one “war escalation”. The national secretary of the French Communist Party warned, on BFMTV and RMC, that he would oppose “firmly to any sign that would allow us to take a further step towards the war in Ukraine”starting with the delivery of “long range missiles” which would allow “to attack Russia on its territory”.
