The positions of the leader of France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, on the tensions around Taiwan and his support for China are far from being unanimous on the side of socialists and environmentalists.
Saturday August 6, China continues to show its muscles against Taiwan. Planes and warships are engaged around the rebel province. This is Beijing’s response to the visit of the leader of the American congressmen, Nancy Pelosi, on the island. This move also arouses controversy in France, in the Nupes camp. On Wednesday August 3, in his blog, Jean-Luc Mélenchon denounced this visit which he considers a “provocation“.
“There is only one China (…). Taiwan is an integral part of China“said the leader of the Insoumis. A statement welcomed by the Chinese Embassy in Paris, Thursday, August 4. The allies of insubordinate France, environmentalists and socialists, have taken their distance. The presidential majority has also criticized the position of Jean-Luc Mélenchon. This controversy reveals radically different conceptions within the Nupes in terms of foreign policy.
