It was in the air, it’s now official. The rebellious leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon confirmed Thursday, June 12 in Marseilles that he would not stand for legislative elections in his constituency of Bouches-du-Rhône, parachuting in his place a faithful, his campaign director Manuel Bompard.

Without saying more, and without presenting Manuel Bompard more precisely, the rebellious leader assured him: “We will win, and I will be Prime Minister”. “In all the countries of Europe, we vote for a Prime Minister, we elect a monarch. This does not mean that we are obliged to forget how democracy works”he snapped.

A constituency won over to the Insoumis

Jean-Luc Mélenchon therefore bequeaths to Manuel Bompard his 4th constituency of Bouches-du-Rhône, in the popular center of Marseille, which he had won hands down in 2017 (59.85%) and where he exceeded 54% votes in the first round of the presidential election on April 10. A result that had it “much moved”he confided while voting in the second round, acknowledging to be “a patch here”.

Manuel Bompard, 36, is from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Born in Firminy (Loire), he grew up in Drôme and very recently left Toulouse to settle in the district. “Even if, with the campaign, I spent most of my time in Paris”he conceded in front of a handful of journalists.
