Jean-Luc Godard is dead

Director Jean-Luc Godard has died at the age of 91, according to information from Release. The daily learned the sad news from his relatives on Tuesday September 13, 2022. The Franco-Swiss artist figure of the New Wave and born on December 3, 1930 in Paris, left us leaving behind him an immense career marked by works like Out of breath, Pierrot le Fou or Contempt. Complete author of his films for which he signs the scripts, the dialogues or the editing, Jean-Luc Godard has also been a producer and writer, as well as a critic and theoretician of cinema. Jean-Luc Godard was in a relationship with Anna Karina – who died in 2019 – from 1961 to 1967 then with Anne Wiazemsky from 1967 to 1970. The latter died in 2017. His last companion Anne-Marie Miéville, Swiss filmmaker and producer.

Jean-Luc Godard joins his peers Éric Rohmer, François Truffaut and Claude Chabrol with whom he began his career in the 1950s as a film critic. It was in 1959 that he made his first feature film, Breathless with the one who will become an icon, Jean-Paul Belmondo. Trying out different genres, he realized Alphaville, science fiction film (Golden Bear in Berlin), then Pierrot le fou, another road movie with Bébel, which has become a masterpiece.

Having become a world-leading filmmaker, he saw the events of 1968 as a break with the cinema system. He has become politically radicalized and some would say marginalized. During this period his films were little shown. From 1974, he experimented with video with his partner Anne-Marie Miéville, worked for television and moved away from cinema. The 1980s marked his return to the forefront of the artistic scene with Save who can (life)then he will sign essay-films like History(ies) of cinema. He won the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival for Farewell to language in 2014, as well as two honorary Césars, in 1987 and 1998, and an honorary Oscar in 2010 for his entire career. In 2018, he received a special Palme d’or for The picture book and all his work at the 71st Cannes Film Festival.
