The president of the Union of Democrats and Independents (UDI) Jean-Christophe Lagarde was taken into police custody on Wednesday September 7 morning as part of the investigation into the false accusations against Raquel Garrido and Alexis Corbière, franceinfo learned on Wednesday September 7 with the Paris prosecutor’s office, confirming information from the Parisian. The investigators are therefore trying to find out if the former deputy deliberately gave false information about the two elected La France insoumise to the journalist Aziz Zemouri, as he accuses him of.

At the heart of this case, a pseudo-investigation published by the journalist Aziz Zemouri on June 22 in the weekly Pointin which he accused the couple of deputies La France insoumise of employing “for a year a cleaning lady without a residence permit and subjected to infernal cadences“, relying on alleged screenshots of heated text conversations between Raquel Garrido and her housekeeper.

However, the authenticity of these screenshots was quickly questioned by other journalists. The investigation had finally been withdrawn the next day and the director of the weekly, Etienne Gernelle, had apologized to the couple of deputies. Aziz Zemouri was then laid off and summoned, as part of an internal investigation by the editorial staff of the Point to understand how false information could have been published in this way.

Raquel Garrido and Alexis Corbière have filed a complaint, an investigation for “organized gang fraud, forgery and use of forgery and identity or data theft” was opened by the Paris prosecutor’s office on June 29. Under fire from critics, the journalist then turned against his sources, Jean-Christophe Lagarde and ex-policeman Noam Anouar, announcing to file a complaint for fraud.

The ex-policeman was also placed in police custody on Wednesday, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed to AFP.

This false information was released on June 22, three days after the defeat of Jean-Christophe Lagarde in the legislative elections. He was beaten by Raquel Garrido in the 5th district of Seine-Saint-Denis.
