It is a message that must have reassured certain candidates in the presidential election. Jean Castex called on the elected officials who would not have done so “bring their sponsorships” to candidates who have not obtained the necessary 500 referrals, Tuesday, February 22.
The Prime Minister recalled that out of 42,000 elected officials authorized to sponsor a candidate (parliamentarians, mayors, departmental and regional councillors), only 10,000 had granted their signature. However, several candidates, on the right and on the left, are worried about not gathering the necessary support before the March 4 deadline, despite good results in the polls. Marine Le Pen like Eric Zemmour announced on Tuesday that they were postponing trips to focus on the hunt for signatures.
Jean Castex pointed out that sponsoring a candidate “does not automatically equate to political support”. A conviction already expressed by the LR mayor of Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes) David Lisnard, who chose to sponsor Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The Prime Minister also said “support the initiative” by François Bayrou, who created a “sponsorship pool” to help candidates exceeding 10% of voting intentions.
Jean Castex will also receive all the associations of local elected officials on Thursday morning, as well as the presidents of the National Assembly and the Senate. They should “discuss this situation together with respect for everyone’s freedom”, “because there is a deeply democratic subject”.
