It is a very strange affair in which one finds himself Jean Alesi the last days. Former great Formula 1 driver at more than 200 Grand Prix in his career, the 57-year-old man was taken into custody last Monday near Avignon (Vaucluse). According to the vice-prosecutor of Nîmes, he “was taken into police custody on Monday around 4:00 p.m. for damaging the property of others by means of an explosive device”. A family affair since it involves her son as well as her brother-in-law.
After his custody, we now know that Jean Alesi will be judged in January 2023 by the criminal court of Nîmes. Suspected of being the perpetrator, the former pilot will be tried for “damage to the property of others by dangerous means”. But he is not the only one having to face justice since his son will also be prosecuted for complicity in that case. In custody in Avignon since Monday afternoon, the ex-pilot and his son left the Avignon police station on Tuesday, according to AFP information.
Jean Alesi admitted the facts
As for the facts alleged against Jean Alesi, they occurred in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon last Sunday evening. The latter admitted to being the author of the explosion of a large firecracker at the level of the window of his brother-in-law’s office in his architect’s office. The license plate spotted by a neighbor then led to José Alesi, Jean’s brother, initially arrested before the former Scuderia Ferrari driver (1991-1995) went to the police station on Monday.
He then explained to investigators that he was driving the car with his son and a friend of the latter, simply seeking to make a “bad joke” to his brother-in-law, divorce proceeding with his sister, placing “a large fireworks display bought in Italy in the frame of a window of the architect’s office (…), without imagining causing such damage”.
A version that the deputy prosecutor found it hard to believe. “I am quite skeptical of the notion of a ‘joke’ being performed at 10 p.m., without the person concerned knowing who it is”, did he declare. The brother-in-law, who says he has “carefree” with Jean Alesi, however, filed a complaint for the degradation of his window, revealed the deputy prosecutor.
