(Washington) Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance said Vice President Kamala Harris’ entry into the race for the White House after Joe Biden withdrew was a political “dirty move,” according to a recording obtained by The Washington Post.
“We all felt it was a bit of a political dirty trick,” Vance told donors, according to the American newspaper.
These remarks run counter to the repeated public attacks by Donald Trump and his potential future vice-president against the Democratic candidate, holding her “responsible for all the failures” of Joe Biden.
The Republican ticket team insisted that Kamala Harris’ last-minute entry into the campaign would not change their strategy.
“Whether it’s Joe Biden, Kamala Harris or another Democrat from the radical left, they are all responsible for the destruction of our economy and the disintegration of our borders,” said Jason Miller, one of the Republican candidate’s closest advisers, while several Democrats were calling on Joe Biden to drop out of the race for the White House.
The US president announced his withdrawal of candidacy in a letter to Americans on July 21, after a failed debate in late June and several weeks of calls from members of his party for him to step down.
Kamala Harris’ campaign is taking off thanks to record-breaking fundraising in recent days and a surge in grassroots mobilization.
“Kamala [Harris] “is much younger,” Vance also said, adding that the Democrat “clearly does not have the same challenges that Joe Biden has.”
The Ohio representative has seen his popularity rating plummet in recent weeks, particularly due to the resurgence of several videos that could potentially damage his “ticket” with Donald Trump.
In one of them, he mocks “unhappy cat women,” a reference to people who choose to live without a partner or child. Comments that were strongly denounced by Democrats.
