Jays snap Orioles winning streak

José Berríos didn’t concede a hit until the seventh inning, George Springer homered, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 on Wednesday night to end the Orioles’ five-game winning streak .

“He had everything he needed to win against a very high level team,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said of Berríos. He was phenomenal tonight. »

The starting pitcher only allowed two runners to hit the trails after six innings (one walked and one batter reached) before Adley Rutschman started the seventh inning with a softball, which fell past the outfielder center Kevin Kiermaier.

“It’s baseball,” Berríos lamented.

This ended his bid to become only the second player at the club to pitch a no-hitter, a feat achieved by Dave Stieb on September 2, 1990.

The Orioles added two singles against Berríos in the eighth inning before Tim Mayza grounded Gunnar Henderson out to keep it 3-0.

Berríos (7-4) pitched for seven and two-thirds innings. He conceded three hits, struck out five batters and walked one. The 29-year-old right-hander improved to 10-0 against the Orioles.

“We struggled with Berrios,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. I think he was absolutely excellent. We were making quick outs and he was filling the strike zone with all his throws and moving the ball in and out. His fastball had a lot of life. He was hard to hit. »

Jordan Romano gave up three straight two-out singles in the ninth inning, the last being a run single from Aaron Hicks, before pulling out Adam Frazier to earn his 19e rescue.

Berríos outplayed Orioles starter Kyle Bradish (2-3), who had a shutout until Springer hit a solo homer in the sixth inning.

“An old-fashioned throwing duel,” added Schneider.

The Orioles’ five-game winning streak includes an 11-6 loss to the Blue Jays on Tuesday night. The Orioles had a season-high 17 hits in that game.
