Nestor Cortes (1-0) notably signed his first victory of the season. The starter gave up just three hits in four-and-a-third innings. The relievers then conceded two strikes in a safe place, Clay Holmes (1-0) signing among other things his first victory of the campaign.
Aroldis Chapman for his part ended the game with his second save of the campaign, conceding absolutely nothing in the ninth. In total, the Canadian squad had five hits.
The Bronx Bombers didn’t do much better with seven strikes from the safe, but they were opportunistic. Aaron Hicks first drove in his first two runs of the season with a home run in the second inning, then DJ LeMahieu hit the plate on an error by catcher Tyler Heineman in the fourth frame.
A sacrifice fly from Giancarlo Stanton closed the debate in the eighth batting round, allowing Josh Donaldson to score.
Kikuchi flinches
On the Jays side, Yusei Kikuchi (0-1) was playing his very first regular season game in a Jays uniform. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, five hits from the safety net and two free passes in three and two-thirds innings.
The gunner had however had the help of Teoscar Hernandez, who made a powerful throw at the plate to withdraw Donaldson following a double from Anthony Rizzo at the end of the first inning.
The two teams will meet for the third time on Wednesday after dividing the honors of the first two games of the series. They will conclude this series of four duels on Thursday.
