On the eve of the inauguration of the new Argentine President Javier Milei, which takes place on Sunday December 10, Artur Romeu, director of the Latin America office of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), denounces on franceinfo “his openly violent, aggressive, hostile posture towards the press”.

“This is part of an orchestrated strategy to discredit the media which are critical of his candidacy, his program”, he mentions. Artur Romeu points the finger “a violent posture”, “a dangerous character with regard to the relationship which will be established between the new government and the press”.

A large media privatization program

Regarding Javier Milei’s popularity on social media, “this is one of the big problems that we have already seen, for example, in the context of the government in Brazil with Jair Bolsonaro or even before with Donald Trump in the United States”, he explains. For him, it is “a strategy for governing on social networks” to constantly mobilize its supporters and stimulate “a hostile environment for the press”.

The director of RSF’s Latin America bureau is also worried about the dismantling of public media in Argentina. Javier Milei “has a broad program of privatization. He insisted in particular on the dismantling, privatization of public media, television, national press agencies and Argentine radio”he explains.
