Jason Maas named head coach of the Montreal Alouettes

Montreal Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia announced Saturday that Jason Maas has been named the 27th head coach in team history.

Maas and Maciocia are scheduled to meet the media at a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, December 20, at 1 p.m.

Maas, who served as the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, served as head coach in Edmonton from 2016 to 2019. He went 39-33 there and led the team to the playoffs at three times in four seasons.

He began his coaching career in 2012 with the Toronto Argonauts as quarterbacks coach for three seasons, lifting the Gray Cup in his first year in the Queen City. The 47-year-old was also the Ottawa Redblacks’ offensive coordinator in 2015.

Maas began his playing career in the Canadian Football League a year after spending time with the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. The former Oregon Ducks played with Edmonton from 2000 to 2005, winning the Gray Cup with them in 2003 and 2005.

Originally from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Maas was voted most valuable player in 2001 and 2004. He then went to Hamilton in 2006 and 2007 before joining the Alouettes and ending his career with Edmonton playing four years in the ‘West.

“I am extremely happy to be able to hire a coach of Jason’s caliber. He has valuable experience as a head coach in the Canadian Football League, in addition to being a true leader of men,” Maciocia said in a press release.

“Having been around him during my career and having maintained close contact over the years, I am convinced that Jason is the right person to allow us to continue our ascent,” added Maciocia.

This is a return to the metropolis for Maas, who completed the 2007 season in Montreal as a substitute quarterback.

“I am very happy to join the big Alouettes family. The team showed great things last season and I intend to continue and complement the work that Danny has done so that we can enjoy even more success, said Maas in the official Alouettes press release.

“I can’t wait to get to work and work hand in hand with the players and the coaches so that we all become better.”
