(Toronto) Former Team Canada captain Jason deVos has been named interim general secretary of Soccer Canada.
The Canadian Soccer Hall of Famer, who is currently the organization’s director of development, will replace Earl Cochrane, whose departure was recently announced.
Chairman Nick Bontis tendered his resignation at the end of February, after admitting that a change in management had become necessary due to the ongoing labor dispute with the various men’s national teams.
DeVos, a dependable centre-back from Appin, Ont., represented Canada 49 times internationally between 1997 and 2004, and captained the national team to the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2000 .
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank Jason for taking on this responsibility at an important time,” said Charmaine Crooks, Acting Chair of Soccer Canada’s Board of Directors. Other members of Soccer Canada’s “transition team” include Acting Vice-President Kelly Brown, Chief Operating Officer Mathieu Chamberland, Chief Financial Officer Sean Heffernan and Paulo Senra, Head of Public Relations and communications.
Soccer Canada said deVos, who will take on the role of Acting General Secretary effective May 12, “will become the operational leader of the organization, working closely with the Board of Directors and in consultation with members and key stakeholders. of Soccer Canada”.
