Japanese Bgirl Ami becomes first Olympic breaking champion

(Paris) For the first Olympic appearance of breaking, the Japanese Bgirl Ami, 25 years old, won a historic gold medal to the warm applause of the crowd at La Concorde.

After six hours of “battles” between the 16 best break dancers in the world, the Japanese double world champion (2019, 2022) became the first Olympic queen of this dance art from hip-hop culture.

Ami Yuasa, her real name, dominated in the final against the Lithuanian Nicka with three sets to zero on the cypher, the name given to the circular stage used by the dancers, installed near the Luxor Obelisk.

The two French participants, Bgirl Carlota and Bgirl Sissy, were eliminated in the first round and quarter-finals respectively.

On Saturday, it will be the Bboys’ turn to join the dance for a probable last lap of the Olympic track. An additional sport in Paris, breaking was not selected by the Los Angeles-2028 organizing committee.
