Japan has issued a tsunami warning for remote islands off Tokyo following an earthquake that the U.S. Geological Survey said had a magnitude of 5.6.
The warning concerns the islands of Izu and Ogasawara, which could experience a tsunami of one meter, according to the Japanese meteorological agency, which urged people to leave the shores.
“Get out of the water and evacuate coastal areas immediately,” the agency said in an English-language warning.
Residents in the area told national broadcaster NHK that they did not feel the earthquake.
At the crossroads of several tectonic plates along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, Japan is one of the countries with the most seismic activity in the world.
The archipelago, home to some 125 million people, experiences around 1,500 tremors a year, most of them of low magnitude.
