Japan is testing a robot dog to help with forestry work

Japan is testing Boston Dynamics’ “Spot” – a yellow, four-legged robot – in forests to see if it can help carry out work in the country’s logging industry.

In a video released recently, the electric dog is seen going up a grassy slope, making its way through a forest and climbing onto a tree stump without help.

The experiment is part of a trial conducted by Japan’s Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute and telecommunications company SoftBank Corp, with the robot being developed by Boston Dynamics.

The goal is to find a solution to the shrinking Japanese workforce caused by the aging population. The researchers hope that the robot will be able to carry out forest patrols and transport goods autonomously in the near future.
