Another example of global warming. Japan experienced its warmest spring this year since climate statistics began in the country in 1898, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said in a statement Thursday (June 1). The average temperature during the months of March, April and May was 1.59 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms, a record high, according to the JMA.

“As global warming progresses, such record high temperatures are increasingly likely to occur,” noted the meteorological agency. The JMA also announced that the average sea surface temperature around Japan’s coasts over the past three months was the third highest since 1982.

Due to greenhouse gases generated by human activities, the planet has already gained an average of nearly 1.2°C since the pre-industrial era. Most of this warming has occurred over the past 50 years.
