James Smith First Nation shooting: investigation into death of second suspect

The death of Myles Sanderson in the wake of his arrest by the Saskatchewan Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is under investigation.

One of the two suspected perpetrators of the James Smith First Nation stabbing on Sunday was in medical distress after his arrest on Wednesday following a manhunt that has gripped all of Canada.

The Saskatoon Police Department said Thursday that two independent investigators will be appointed to investigate the matter.

“Once completed, the findings of the investigation will be forwarded to the Department of Justice and the Attorney General,” the police force said in the statement.

Reflection

Leaders from the Cree communities spoke at a rally on Thursday to send a message of love and forgiveness and prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.

“No words can underscore the feelings we are going through,” James Smith First Nation Chief Wally Burns said at the outset.

Mr. Burns made three requests to the government, they relate to the establishment of a police force in the community, help for drug addiction and addictions and treatment centers.

He said grieving families will need resources to heal. “We have to protect our community, fight against drugs and alcohol,” he mentioned, quoted by Global News.

The death of Myles Sanderson, a 32-year-old man with a very heavy criminal record, after a four-day run, was greeted with relief in the bereaved community, which now wants to heal its wounds.
