James Cameron is being honored with great pomp at the Cinémathèque Française, in Paris, from Thursday April 4, with a retrospective of the Canadian director’s films. Avatar Or Titanic until the end of May. But also a major exhibition on his work, scheduled until January 2025.
It was to the applause of journalists, most of whom were standing, that the filmmaker arrived at a press conference. The day before he himself had been able to wander through this exhibition, his exhibition, “The Art of James Cameron” which notably presents many original drawings by the director. Those from his childhood inspired by comics and science fiction stories but also the storyboards, these preparatory drawings before shooting the scenes, from his most recent films: “It’s really like a biography of my ideas, from childhood to today. I don’t consider myself an artist in the strict sense. But the added value of this exhibition is to present my development as a director as an artist. I try to paint with light on the big screen.”
“Artificial intelligence cannot create a finalized image”
James Cameron has often said, two of his greatest successes, Terminator And Avatar are projects originating from an image that he had seen in a dream, he also anticipated – among other things – artificial intelligence and its possible abuses, a concern that has become very current, but he assures that he does not will never be used to create: “It’s a complicated subject. We are faced, at the moment, with its impact on cinema and art in general. In any case, we have never created images with AI and we could not not do it in our creative process for films Avatar. AI cannot create a finalized image since it is based on what the actors do.”
A visionary director who, from the 90s onwards, has always succeeded in technically revolutionizing cinema with each new film, Matthieu Orléan is co-curator of the exhibition: “All his work never stops pushing the limits, working more and more on digital special effects, then 3D at a given moment which fits into his work. But always in accordance with a story. There is always a match between cutting-edge technicality and an emotional charge which creates empathy with the spectator.”
Fans will be able to appreciate the life-size models of Terminator or the creature ofAliensa French audience that James Cameron praised for always being loyal to him, helping him break several world box office records.
