Albin Lewi is the artistic director of Canneséries, the Cannes International Series Festival, which takes place every year on the Croisette and is recognizable by its pink carpet. Its seventh edition opens Friday April 5, 2024. The opening ceremony will be broadcast on Canal+ Friday at 8:30 p.m. and the public will have free access to the festival until April 10.

Surfing on “the Cannes effect”this international aura gives a spotlight to Canneséries. Previous editions like the quality of the series offered mean that “little by little, we proved ourselves“, underlines Albin Lewi. “We have had very big series in the past and that is what allows us to have such a strong lineup this year with the biggest series from the biggest platforms: Netflix, Disney+, Canal+, Prime Video and even Apple TV.“, continues Albin Lewi.

This year, out of competition, series like Terminal with Jamel Debbouze and Ramzy Bedia, Fiasco with Pierre Niney and François Civil, the Karl Lagerfeld biopic with Alex Lutz, Brocéliandethe first series with Nolwenn Leroy or even Franklin with Michael Douglas. Alongside these blockbusters, there will be discoveries from around the world, not yet broadcast and presented in preview to the public.

“We want to represent the best series from around the world”

Some 27 series were selected by the team from 300 from around the world. There are few French series in the main competing categories. An observation confirmed by the artistic director. “There is no priority by country, but we have very good documentary series, which is new to the festival since last year,” continues Albin Lewi. Two highly anticipated French series nevertheless find themselves in competition: DJ Mehdi: Made in France by Thibault de Longeville and Dale the Undercover by David André.

The Festival continues to explore new territories. “We are going to present Brazilian series and Chinese series. We are opening up even more to the world“, underlines Albin Lewi. It is South Korea which was in some way in the spotlight in 2023 since the creator of Squid Game had come. A South Korean anchorage made possible thanks to the enormous successes, particularly on the platforms, which means that Western audiences are better able to understand and appreciate its series. Long confined to American or local series, viewers can, thanks to platforms, open up to the world from their living room, “the valve has been opened and a series from any territory can be a global hit” analyzes Albin Lewi.

To close the event, an iconic prize will be awarded to the American actor Twin Peaksinterpreter of Dale Cooper, Kyle MacLachlan. A tribute that makes sense according to its artistic director “it’s also the DNA of Canneséries”.
