The bill aimed at including voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) in the Constitution was presented, on the morning of Tuesday, December 12, to the Council of Ministers. The bill will be presented to the Assembly on January 24.
A bill aims to enshrine voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) in the Constitution. This is a long-standing demand from feminist associations, but it is the revocation of the right to abortion in the United States in 2022, condemned by part of the political class in France, which pushed Emmanuel Macron to react. Presented to the Council of Ministers on the morning of Tuesday December 12, the bill will arrive in the Assembly on January 24.
More than 234,000 abortions performed in France in 2022
According to this bill, the following statement will be added to article 34 of the Constitution: “The law determines the conditions under which a woman’s freedom is exercised, which is guaranteed to her, to have recourse to a voluntary termination of pregnancy.” Feminist activists welcome an important symbol, but regret that the term “freedom”, less legally strong than that of “fundamental right”. According to the latest figures, more than 234,000 abortions were performed in France in 2022, a use that has been constantly increasing in recent years, and which mainly affects women aged 20 to 29.
