To avoid retaliatory measures against British fishing boats, intense negotiations have been underway since Monday, November 1, 3 p.m. Paris wants to push the British to grant new fishing permits to French boats.
Between Paris, London (United Kingdom) and Brussels (Belgium), the dialogue resumed Monday, November 1, and could last all night. Fishing licenses in UK waters are at the heart of the negotiations. In the evening, Jersey confirmed the establishment of 49 additional licenses. The objective is to lower the tension while the French sanctions should come into force at midnight. In the port of Granville (Manche), fishermen say they are worried: the survival of their business is at stake.
“For the moment, it is the English who choose everything, and we, as French, we have nothing to choose, we just have to suffer“, castigates a fisherman. The whole industry could be affected by the sanctions. At Arnaud Deleforge, fishmonger at Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais), the majority of the products come from the United Kingdom. Today they are essential to its activity. If France applies the retaliatory measures, it will control more British products. For Arnaud Deleforge, the goods could then arrive late, and therefore less fresh. Today, 30% of the turnover of French fishing depends on British waters.
