After the mildness of spring and the sun at the start of the week, the weather promises to be rainy in Franche-Comté. Good news for the basins and ponds of ranaculturists (= frog breeders).

In Franche-Comté, the star: it’s the common frog!

In Franche-Comté, the most common species is the common frog : a frog that tends to disappear over the years due to weather, climatic conditions and products spread in the countryside.

If it continues like this, the frog will become a luxury item!

Several customers also travel miles every week to come and eat Franche-Comté frog! On the price side, to taste a dozen frogs on the plate, it will be necessary to spend twenty euros per person!

He works with his uncle Patrick at the Hôtel de Gigot in Bretonvillers. At its feet the river, all around the forest… in the hollow of the Valley of Dessoubre and Reverotte. Family house since 1939, this restaurant offers a menu full of traditions highlighting regional cuisine: morels, salted meats, trout and carp from the pond, frogs in season, seasonal products respecting the know-how transmitted.

“They stole my frogs!”

The phenomenon has unfortunately become common in the month of March, spring being considered the period of the frog.

A week ago, Bruno DEFFAIT, raniculturist in Nancray (25)was unpleasantly surprised to find the flight of his frogs on its operation. Despite the surveillance cameras installed around the pools, a man entered the scene for him steal all his frogs.

500 to 1,000 batrachians vanished and the traps and their equipment were stolen.
Amount of larceny: more than 2.000€ ! A complaint has been filed and an investigation has been launched to find the individual.
