“It’s one more siphon”, according to the director of the “Opinion and politics” department of Ipsos

Gabriel Attal’s new government, unveiled Thursday, has 14 ministers, most of whom come from the ranks of the right. According to Stéphane Zumsteeg, director of the “Opinion and politics” department of the Ipsos institute, Emmanuel Macron has been pursuing the same strategy of “individual poaching” since 2017.

Action, results are what the new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is asking from his government. A tighter team announced Thursday January 12 with 14 ministers in total and gender parity, but not really political parity with many more personalities from the right. Eight of the fourteen ministers had at one time an LR card or a UMP card. “It’s one more siphon, there is nothing new under the sun”estimates Stéphane Zumsteeg, director of the “Opinion and politics” department of the Ipsos institute. “Since 2017, Emmanuel Macron has constantly adopted the same strategy, that is to say, doing as much harm as possible to the Republican right. There is a technique here that still seems operate from individual poaching.

A right-leaning team

If Bruno Le Maire remains Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, while Gérald Darmanin remains at the Ministry of the Interior, and Éric Dupond-Moretti at the Ministry of Justice, this team is right-wing with the arrival of Catherine Vautrin Minister of Labor, Health and Solidarity and Rachida Dati as Minister of Culture. “The goal is always this electoral bet to say that the next electoral events will only be played out on the right, continues Stéphane Zumsteeg. That between the National Rally and the presidential bloc, there is a small force (LR) that must be ‘put to death somewhere’, because that is where the electoral dividing lines between the radical right are found and the center right.”
