Guest of 12/13 info, Friday February 16, Vincent Chaudel, sports economist and co-founder of the Sports Business Observatory, discusses the announcement by Kylian Mbappé of his departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the end of the season.

Kylian Mbappé announced to the president of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, his departure from the football club at the end of the season. Is this a big blow for PSG from a marketing point of view? “Paradoxically, it’s more of an opportunity than a problem or a loss,” indicates Vincent Chaudel, sports economist and co-founder of the Sports Business Observatory, in the 12/13 info of Friday February 16.

An average annual salary of 72 million euros

With other players like Lionel Messi or Neymar, Kylian Mbappé made it possible to “develop the PSG brand, which is today valued at 4.2 billion euros”, continues Vincent Chaudel. “Thanks to all its stars, the club was able to generate a turnover of 800 million euros last year, including 400 million from sponsorship contracts. These contracts are multi-year contracts, hence the departure of Kylian Mbappé will not impact these contracts directly“, he explains.

Furthermore, the departure of Kylian Mbappé also means for the club the end of the payment of his salary, on average 72 million euros per year.. “It’s a bit of a paradox. In terms of revenue, there should not be much impact for the club. In terms of expenses, for once, the club will find a fairly significant margin of maneuver to attract other players”explains the sports economist.
