The thousands of French customers of the Spanish group Iberdrola, a competitor of EDF, have just learned that their electricity contract was going to be terminated. The supplier’s business model is no longer profitable.

Iberdrola is one of EDF’s main competitors in France, with hundreds of thousands of customers. But with the Ukrainian crisis, several thousand of them received a letter of breach of contract. Contacted, the sales department of the Spanish operator is justified: “Prices have already been multiplied by three or four. It’s to protect the customer”. On Twitter, some Internet users expressed their dissatisfaction.

A client, who had a payment delay of a few days, was threatened with a power cut. Iberdrola has established itself in France by guaranteeing more advantageous tariffs than EDF, but for Nathalie Janson, economist, teacher-researcher at Neoma, their model is no longer profitable. “They are simply unable to keep the prices, in any case to renew them at this same level”, she says. Gas or electricity, other suppliers are in the same case: the Italian Eni, Cdiscount Energie or Antargaz.
