Thanks to the mild temperatures at the end of October, summer vegetables are still popular on the markets. The situation remains worrying, especially for farmers who already have to sow on their land.
It’s the vegetable of the day, but not really the dish of the day. For halloween this Monday, October 31, we prefer to sculpt the cucurbit rather than cooking it. In a market in Besançon (Doubs)we still buy tomatoes and summer peppers. The weather does not encourage consumers to follow the seasons and turn to squash rather than summer vegetables. “Normally, I sell a lot of pumpkins, butternuts too and there they didn’t even touch the cash register”, confides a scoop.
Justine Boyer, market gardener from Puy-de-Dôme, is not going to deprive herself of her peppers, on the pretext that November is coming. For the moment, no frost is expected, so the greenhouses remain open. “Usually at the beginning of October, I start closing the greenhouses at night. This year I don’t have that problem.”, she explains. In the Marne, the land is already ready to sow wheat, fifteen days in advance. A farmer hopes it won’t grow too fast or it might freeze in the middle of winter.
