Demonstrators mobilized against a mega-basin project in Puy-de-Dôme on Saturday May 11. To talk about it, Ludovic Landais, spokesperson for the Confédération paysanne and Romain Blanchard, deputy secretary general of the FNSEA, are guests of 19/20 info.

6,500 people gathered during the day of Saturday May 11 to oppose a megabasin project, mainly intended to irrigate corn fields in Puy-de-Dôme. A gathering under close surveillance which was organized following a call from ecological associations and the Peasant Confederation. “It’s a completely short-term project”judge Ludovic Landais, spokesperson for the Peasant Confederation. “We have to reinvent agriculture (…) today we have to recreate a diet and redo a quality diet”he says.

How to reconcile ecology and agriculture?

Environmental associations assure that this project is a “aberration”, while it is supported by some farmers. Romain Blanchard, deputy secretary general of the FNSEA, assures that retaining excess water is feasible. “I don’t believe that quality food is necessarily non-irrigated”he argues.
