The Senate debates whether or not voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) should be included in the Constitution on Wednesday, February 28, before a vote scheduled for the evening. “It is a historic day for our country, for French women, but also historic for women around the world (…) who continue to fight for this fundamental right to control their bodies”says Xavier Iacovelli, RDPI (Renaissance) senator from Hauts-de-Seine, interviewed in 19/20 info.
A majority in favor of registration
The senators debate in particular on two amendments tabled by The Republicans to modify the text resulting from the debates in the National Assembly. If these amendments were adopted, they would trigger a second reading. “This is what is at stake in these debates and the vote which will happen in a few moments”, explains the senator. Xavier Iacovelli is confident about the outcome of the vote. “What I can measure is a majority of senators who are in favor of inclusion in the Constitution”. “If it is voted in conformity, we will have a Congress on Monday at 3 p.m., in Versailles”he concludes.
