During the fortnight, franceinfo imagines the Paris Games in 28 years. Here is the first day of a series of six episodes.
What there is to know
The eyes of the world are on Paris and the 2024 Olympic Games, whose opening ceremony takes place on Friday, July 26. But read this carefully: here, we are in June 2052, in a world even more disrupted by climate change. Franceinfo is taking advantage of this fortnight to imagine what these same Paris Games could look like in twenty-eight years.
Franceinfo has chosen to tell, in (almost) real time, six significant days of these Olympic and Paralympic Games of the future. A story of anticipation based on current knowledge, supported by reports and interviews with climate science researchers and personalities from the world of sport (see our methodology). The final scenario describes a Games marked by a chosen sobriety and a recourse to technology, sometimes synonymous with maladaptation.
Organization postponed to June, limited travel, disciplines that have disappeared or are forced to evolve, consequences of the effects of heat on the human body… Project yourself into the heart of the biggest sporting event adapted (or not) to the average increase of 2.7°C in France compared to the pre-industrial era. Here is the story of the first day, during which the new face of Paris and the Games of tomorrow is already taking shape. Time for the opening ceremony, with a parade of athletes very different from today’s.

Finally, here we are! H-2 before the start of the opening ceremony of the 2052 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the Stade de France. They are once again in June, to avoid the unbearable temperatures of summer. If you follow us from afar, that gives you time to adjust your augmented reality lenses. Two possible options with the expensive RealPremium subscription this year: follow the show alongside the French delegation or sit in the VIP stand.
-
Let’s face it, the Stade de France doesn’t look its 54th birthday, with its retractable green roof covered in solar panels. In a hologram, above the stadium, the motto of the Games floats in the air: “Citius, Altius, Fortius, Sobrius”.
-
The “Circle Paris” is already quite busy. On the two electrified tracks reserved for cars, it’s bumper to bumper. For the moment, the CirculR metro, free during the Games, is keeping up the pace: one train every two minutes. Right next door, bikes whizz along the “promenade douce” (gentle promenade), heading for the huge dedicated parking lot at the Stade de France. Find out the traffic in real time on Real-Time Traffic Control, to know when to leave and where to go or to find a carpool.
-
The most forward-thinking spectators are already there. The crowd moves at a steady pace thanks to the free-flow scanners, which review 100 people per minute. In addition to threatening objects and suspicious behavior, the gate can detect visitors’ entry passes and their carbon-free transport certificate, as the International Olympic and Paralympic Committee (IOPC) has severely limited arrivals by plane.
-
The scanners also detect certificates of compulsory vaccination against certain tropical diseases, which are widespread due to global warming. “There is a major risk of an epidemic spreading in France due to the influx of visitors during the Olympic Games, at a time when mosquitoes are very present”declared the High Authority of Health to justify its decision.

While everyone is settling in, tell me what you think of these Games which are continuing their ecological transition, which began thirty years ago.
I am a fan of grass ski jumping! I even took out a license last year at my club in Lille.
What a joy, the joint Games between Olympic and Paralympic athletes! When I think that some people thought the idea of bringing the two together was stupid… It is so much fairer and more ecological to pool the events!

The entrance gate to the Stade de France has just rung. Activists from the French branch of the No Sport collective are being evacuated by the police. “In a world where hunger affects hundreds of millions of people, it is unbearable that a handful of privileged people can burn so many calories for the pleasure of a few.”his leader shouts into a megaphone. The World Health Organization has already responded to the controversy, still supporting the practice of sport as beneficial for the well-being and health of populations.

This morning, the interview with American Olympic freestyle scooter champion Pixie Oxela was the most shared. She announced her withdrawal for ecological reasons, a few hours before the events. “I will no longer travel by plane. We need to change our societies to finally meet our climate commitments. The spectators’ travel is limited, why not ours?”asks the star of the discipline. She is the 23rd athlete to publicly renounce the event.

It is 8:52 p.m. The opening ceremony officially begins. France will parade in last position, around 10:40 p.m., led by the Blues of the summer biathlon (shooting and roller skiing), collectively elected flag bearers a week ago.
-
Deep emotion when the drone camera films Tarlan Lanok. He is the first flag bearer of the new Pacific delegation, bringing together Vanuatu, Tonga, Kiribati and Tuvalu. The athlete from the Marshall Islands, which disappeared due to rising waters, owes his name to a former atoll.
