Italy: ten years after the sinking of the Costa Concordia, wounds are still alive

It is a little after 9 p.m. on January 13, 2012, when the liner Costa Concordia impaled on rocks off the Italian island of Giglio. At this time, the 4,000 passengers are having dinner. Very quickly, the water rushed in and the boat leaned spectacularly. Forty five minutes later, the evacuation is announced in the mess. The crew gives contradictory instructions and the captain is no longer there, he has fled.

The authorities of the nearby port order him to return to the liner. Commander Francesco Schettino was sentenced to sixteen years in prison, a sentence he is currently serving. Ten years later, many passengers repeat it: yes, the captain is guilty, but he is not the only one. “He is responsible for what happened to us fully, for the death of the 32 victims, fully, for all the trauma (…), but the crisis management, again, again and again, was very, very badly managed”, says Anne Decre, a passenger on the Costa Concordia.
