In the streets of Rome (Italy), tasting an ice cream is a must. In recent months, however, its price has soared. French people visiting the Italian capital for the first time are amazed. “It’s still expensive, our two ice creams are 7 euros”, says a woman. Italian ice cream has increased by 23% over the past year.
Global inflation in question
In question, global inflation, which particularly affects raw materials and energy. Massimiliano Del Monte, ice cream maker, has hiked his prices by 50 cents over the past few months. “We make the ice cream in an artisanal way. (…) So we use white sugar, which unfortunately in the last six months has increased by 30%. And in our fridge, we keep fresh milk and crème fraiche, which have increased by 40%”, he confides. In other shops, the costs are passed on to certain supplements, such as whipped cream.
