(Ottawa) The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will visit Canada on March 2, but she is only scheduled to visit Toronto.
In this year when Italy holds the G7 presidency, Prime Minister Meloni and her Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau, will address global issues, including their support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s war of aggression and the crisis raging in the Middle East.
The two heads of government must also talk about climate action and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
This will be Prime Minister Meloni’s first official visit to Canada since her election as Prime Minister of Italy in 2022.
In Canada, more than 1.5 million people claimed to be of Italian origin in 2021. According to the Canadian government, this is one of the largest Italian diasporas in the world.
In 2023, bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Italy totaled $15.6 billion, making Italy Canada’s eighth-largest global merchandise trading partner.
