On the sidelines of the announcement of his list on Wednesday, the French coach indicated that he would favor a system with four defenders as in 2018, rather than a defense with three.
Didier Deschamps revealed, Wednesday, November 9, his list of 25 players selected to compete in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with the France team. Among them, no less than nine defenders (Varane, Upamecano, Kimpembe, Konaté, Saliba, Koundé, Pavard, L. Hernandez and T. Hernandez). Asked about a potential return of a four-man defense at a press conference, the coach admitted that he was going to abandon the three-man system. A scheme he had tested several times since Euro 2021.
“The option is not a three-man defense. After analyzing what we did, a lot of discussions with my staff and with the players, we felt that we were very often out of balanceexplained the 1998 world champion. It will be a four-man defense. In a big competition, you have to be solid defensively. It’s better, it’s more suitable but the system leads to different player choices”.
Precisely, the Marseillais Jonathan Clauss, who had been called during the last three rallies in a piston role, paid the price for this decision. The former RC Lens was not invited to the World Cup.
