“It was my 21st complaint in a year,” confides the President of the National Assembly

Regularly the victim of anti-Semitic threats, the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, assures that these letters “incite a fight”. She files a complaint “systematically”.

“I did the accounts and it was the 21st complaint in a year”, confides Wednesday September 13 on franceinfo Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the National Assembly, Renaissance deputy for Yvelines. She announced Monday on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that she had received a new anti-Semitic letter addressed to her office. “The crows are also coming back” she wrote in her message accompanied by a photo of the envelope on which the sender drew a yellow star. The elected official announced that she had filed a complaint.

“I experience it badly because in addition in each letter, we talk about my children, we say that we are going to take action. I experience it badly because my family fled Nazism and took refuge in France. France was the land that welcomed them and allowed them to make a life for themselves.”, confides Yaël Braun-Pivet. Today, she continues, “their granddaughter became president of the National Assembly. So that there are still people in France who make these anti-Semitic threats is the worst nightmare they could have experienced since they had found asylum here..

The chosen one repeats that this “it hurts” but these anti-Semitic letters “incite to fight” also. Because she receives “many testimonies, many messages of support from all sides, from all political camps”. Thanks to that, “I tell myself that I am not alone”she adds, emphasizing that the fight against anti-Semitism is “a collective issue because the society that we want to build together is a society that does not support hatred of others, whether for their religion or for their culture or their origin”.

A complaint filed

Yaël Braun-Pivet announced that he had filed a complaint after receiving this letter on Monday. And she does and will “systematically”because it must be denounced for “to be able to prosecute and punish” perpetrators of anti-Semitic acts. Then, “collectively, we need to be aware of this resurgence of anti-Semitism in our country”, adds the President of the National Assembly. Furthermore, she believes that it is necessary “also an awareness of what elected officials can suffer”.

She specifies that in 2022, violence against elected officials has increased “by 32%”. “When you get involved in politics, it shouldn’t cost you, you shouldn’t be threatened, you shouldn’t be afraid to get involved“, launches Yaël Braun-Pivet. She responded to the letter sent by Emmanuel Macron after the meetings in Saint-Denis, on August 30. In the letter she sent to the head of state, the president of the National Assembly pleads for the establishment “of a true status of the chosen one”.
