“It seems quite illusory to me” to strengthen surveillance at the border between France and Belgium, reacts Tuesday October 17 on franceinfo Floran Vadillo, expert in security issues and the fight against terrorism, after Gérald Darmanin’s announcement. The Minister of the Interior called for strengthened border controls, after the terrorist attack which killed two Swedish football fans in Brussels on Monday October 16.

“Because the European area is an area of freedom of movement”argues the expert. “We have reduced our border control capabilities”. The main suspect in this firearm attack, a 45-year-old Tunisian, is still on the run Tuesday morning, October 17. According to Florian Vadillo, strengthening border surveillance results in “no more patrols on public transport” which connect France and Belgium, “more regular patrols” and “more frequent identity checks” in border villages.
“It is in the interest of all countries and in particular border countries to arrest this individual to avoid a deadly journey which would be exported to other countries”recognizes the expert, who explains that Belgium is “the hub of all European security services”. But Florian Vadillo assures that a “Individuals, in these journeys, are more likely to stay in territories they know” to hide.
