Asthma concerns more than 4 million people in France. The specialists want to break certain received ideas concerning this pathology and in particular the practice of sport. The 1 p.m. met Dorian Chérioux, 27, severe asthmatic and aspiring marathon runner.

It’s the last minute of warm-up before the starting signal. Dorian Chérioux is ready for his 10 km race: “I have my music, my phone and my emergency treatment”, he describes. When he was diagnosed with severe asthma at age 21, he challenged himself to take up running. He began training with medical monitoring and a year of respiratory rehabilitation. His first kilometer run was a small victory. Monday, May 1, he set his best time.

A poorly recognized pathology

Asthma is still poorly recognized. Dorian has already had to justify himself to an employer, the day he requested an absence for a medical appointment. He is now on biotherapy which reduces the inflammation of the bronchi. If he is lucky enough to be diagnosed and to have an effective treatment, this is not the case for all asthmatics. “Almost 50 to 60% of asthmatics are poorly controlled”, says pulmonologist Gilles Garcia. The symptoms of asthma, such as a cough or recurrent bronchitis, should be reported to the doctor.
