The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the National Assembly and MoDem deputy for Hauts-de-Seine Jean-Louis Bourlanges believes that the summit on Ukraine in which Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin have agreed to participate “is not enough at all to guarantee a de-escalation”Monday, February 18 on France Inter.

The MP also believes that“we are already at war” because “1,500 shells were exchanged in the Donbass on Saturday”. “We are in a very violent situation”he assures us, while saying that it is necessary “avoid war” on a larger scale, whether in the field or digitally.

Jean-Louis Bourlanges thinks that Westerners can “provide guarantees” to Vladimir Putin on security in Russia even though he is “obvious”according to him, “that Russia is not threatened“. He also says he is opposed to Ukraine joining NATO because “put through a military alliance against Russia [à l’Ukraine] is definitely a bad idea”. For him, “we must organize Ukraine as a neighborhood common to Russia and Europe, guarantee its independence”.

“If things stay as they are, Vladimir Putin will have lost the game., he analyzes. He will have reestablished the United States in Europe, it will have re-interested in NATO countries like Sweden and Finland which were traditionally neutral and it will have constituted a Ukrainian nation in vigorous opposition with regard to Russia. It will be a failure, hence the temptation to rush forward.”
