The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine is officially claimed by Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday signed a decree to appropriate it “as federal property”.

“It is not an object of war, power plants are objects of electricity production”, declared Wednesday, October 5 on franceinfo Emmanuelle Galichet, teacher-researcher in nuclear physics for the CNAM, the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts. Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant will come under the control of Russian government agencies following Moscow’s official annexation of the region. The Zaporizhia power plant is “Russian-built and therefore they have all the skills in-house to operate this plant.”
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will go there to discuss a protection zone. “He is right to try at all costs to put a safety zone. We hope he will get there because there is no question that there will be new bombardments on the plant.“
kyiv believes that there should be a demilitarized zone. “It’s going to be difficult because even in peacetime the nuclear power plants are secure. There’s no question whether it’s the Russians or the Ukrainians who are operating this plant, that they leave the doors open. So, an area demilitarized I don’t think so, but an area where there is no bombardment is important“, explained Emmanuelle Galichet.
