It is easy to buy an electric vehicle quickly and take advantage of the $7,000 subsidy, argues Minister of the Environment Benoît Charette

It would be possible to obtain an electric vehicle in Quebec in a few days and take advantage of the $7,000 subsidy before it disappears, according to Minister of the Environment Benoit Charrette.

“There are models, there are deliveries starting next week,” he said. “It’s possible to get some quickly.”

According to CAA-Quebec, the delays in obtaining an electric vehicle can range from “a few months to two years and even three for certain models”.

The wait “is very real,” reports the organization.

Benoît Charette also “admits” that the “delivery date is much later” for certain popular models, but should not prevent consumers from taking advantage of the Roulez vert program before it disappears in three years.

The minister was reacting to the Léger/Le Journal -TVA Nouvelles poll which shows that 52% of people believe that the gradual disappearance of the government rebate on electric cars announced in the recent budget is a bad measure.

During the budget, the Legault government announced that the $7,000 subsidy for the purchase of green vehicles will be gradually reduced starting next year before disappearing in 2027.

Thermal vehicles

In total, 34% of survey respondents will think twice before buying an electric car and 20% will choose a less expensive model. Worse still, one in four people no longer intend to purchase a green vehicle if there is no longer any subsidy. They will return to gasoline vehicles, they say.

Mr. Charette “does not think” that people will turn to gasoline vehicles for all that. “We can make a bet together, within three years, the price of zero-emission vehicles will decrease,” he said.

Minister Charette pointed out that people still have time to take advantage of the Roulez vert program.

“It’s an end to the subsidy that is not immediate,” he reiterated.

The Quebec government wants two million electric vehicles on our roads by 2030.

It is mainly relying on the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) standard to achieve this target.

The standard forces manufacturers to sell an increasing number of green vehicles in Quebec by the ban on the sale of thermal cars in 2035.
