On this freezing Saturday for a month of June, Montreal could record the lowest maximum temperature for a June 18 since 1922, entrusted to the To have to Guillaume Perron, Environment Canada meteorologist.
“The record is 12.8 and currently we have 11 as the maximum in Montreal. It could still go up a little, but it will be difficult to reach it [les 12,8 degrés] “, he explains, specifying that the new record can only be established in “early evening, when the temperature will stop rising”.
Montreal experienced a “big system from Thursday to Friday”, which “featured vigorous thunderstorms”, “hot temperatures”, but also “the cold that we know today”, notes Mr. Perron. According to him, it is “these temperature contrasts [qui] explain why the cold can go lower”.
This June 18 is indeed particularly cool if we compare it to the last five years, when the average temperature fluctuated between 21.2 and 26.7 degrees – data is missing for 2019.
A record low minimum, i.e. the lowest temperature recorded for this day, should also be reached overnight from Saturday to Sunday in Abitibi.
An isolated event
After the high heat and violent thunderstorms this week, is the sudden drop in temperature alarming? “Not necessarily,” replies the specialist from the federal agency. “It is sure that these are cool temperatures, we will still break some records, but we are talking about an isolated day”, he adds.
The mercury should indeed rise on Sunday, with an expected maximum temperature of 21 degrees, then climb gradually to reach 31 degrees on Friday, according to Environment Canada forecasts.
“We should go a little above seasonal norms in the middle of next week, but for now, I don’t necessarily see exceptional heat that would make me worry,” comments Mr. Perron.
